Community and Road Education Scheme (CARES)
The Community and Road Education Scheme (CARES) is a road safety program based in St Ives for primary school children aged 9 to 12 years. The scheme has been running since 1993 and helps children develop good attitudes toward road safety. CARES also provides students with valuable on-road experience, as the children use bicycles to cycle around a specially built, half scale road network. As they ride their bicycles, the students are coached by Police Officers from the Ku-ring-gai Local Area Command.
As an avid motorcyclist, Dr. Brendan Nelson believes road safety is one of the most vital lessons students can learn at school. He has spoken to students in CARES of the importance of road safety and also has thanked the Police Officers and community volunteers who “tirelessly give of their time to help educate the next generation of road users.”
